Heroes assemble for Spring Clean Cymru

Published: 21/02/2018

Flintshire County Council is proud to be part of this year’s Spring Clean Cymru event, which runs from St David’s Day, 1 March to 4 March. This is a nationwide campaign encouraging people across Wales to get together to help clean up our beautiful Cymru! Part of the Great British Spring Clean, Keep Wales Tidy wants to inspire the people of Wales to get outdoors, to be active and to be proud of where they live. Flintshire Countryside Rangers are joining forces with volunteers, landowners Eni UK Ltd and Keep Wales Tidy to do a litter pick at Talacre as part of the Spring Clean Cymru 2018 initiative. The first Flintshire event kicks off at Talacre on Friday 2 March at 12 noon. Anyone wishing to take part should meet on the beach and all equipment will be provided. This is a joint event between Flintshire, Keep Wales Tidy and Eni. At the same time, a Marine Conservation Society “Beachwatch” event will be taking place. This event forms part of a national event where groups pick a small section of beach, analyse the litter collected and report back to the Marine Conservation Society to build a picture of where the litter comes from (for example the public, shipping, fly-tipped, fishing, medical or sewage). On Sunday, 4 March there will be another clean-up event in Wepre Park from 11am – 2pm, meeting at the Visitor Centre. Organised by the Friends of Wepre Park and supported by Flintshire Countryside Service, anyone wishing to take part is being encouraged to come along dressed as their favourite super hero. Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Countryside, Councillor Carolyn Thomas, said: “Flintshire’s Streetscene team will also be on hand to collect waste and store any plastics collected. Keeping plastics separate from other recycling is proving to be important as getting plastic waste out of marine environments helps to reduce the long-lasting and devastating effects it has on marine life as highlighted in the media recently. “We want to encourage anyone who is able to get involved – please come along to either or both of these events – no need to book, you will be welcome if you just show up!” Spokesperson for Keep Wales Tidy said: “It’s our ambition that 2018 will mark a turning point in the fight against marine litter. We are working with Welsh Government and organisations across all sectors to tackle the issue through practical action, education and campaigns. Everyone can play their part to make a positive and lasting difference to our marine environment. Please join us in caring for our coast. “Keep up-to date with Spring Clean Cymru news by following #SpringCleanCymru on social media.” If you would like to send a reporter, photographer or film crew along to these events, please contact communication@flintshire.gov.uk for more details.
