New Learning Disability Day and Work Opportunities Centre

Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet is to consider a report seeking its approval to contract with Kier Construction for the construction of a new Social Services Learning Disability Day and Work Opportunities Centre on the campus of the former John Summers High School in Queensferry at its meeting on Tuesday, 22 May. The proposed development would replace the existing day service centre at Glanrafon, Queensferry with the day and work opportunities service delivered by the council’s Alternative Delivery Model partner Hft, a national charity that provides services for people with learning disabilities. A full business case for the new facility was approved and funding agreed through the Council’s Capital Programme in February 2017. Planning consent was granted on 7 February 2018. The Learning Disability Day and Work Opportunities service provides meaningful daytime activities, in day centre and work environments, for more than 150 people with learning disabilities. It also delivers respite for people that use services, and for their families and carers. The service supports people to learn new skills, develop independence and to make social connections and friendships. The proposed new ‘hub’ facility will provide improved technology, greater comfort and accessibility. There will also be provision for use of the facilities by other Council services and the wider community where appropriate. Cllr. Christine Jones, Cabinet Member for Social Services said; “I am delighted that Hft have already started working on fundraising plans for the new centre to assist equipping the specialist areas such as a sensory garden. This reflects the commitment of Flintshire County Council and HF Trust to build on our already strong and positive relationship to do our very best to provide a first-class facility for service users, their families and carers and the wider community.”
