North Wales prepares to welcome The Tour of Britain
Flintshire is set to welcome some of the biggest names in cycling on Day Two of
the Friends Life Tour of Britain. This year’s Stage Two route will head through
Wrexham, Flintshire and Denbighshire before finishing in Llandudno, Conwy on
Monday 8 September.
Top Tour de France Teams; Team Sky, Omega Pharma Quick-Step, Movistar and BMC
are expected to lead the way. Twenty teams will be competing overall with well
over 100 riders; including one of the world’s leading sprinters Mark Cavendish.
Last year’s defending champion Sir Bradley Wiggins, as part of Team Sky, will
be joined in a six-man line up by: Ian Stannard, Ben Swift, Bernhard Eisel,
David Lopez and Sebastian Henao.
Speaking about racing the eleventh edition of the race, Sir Bradley Wiggins
said: The Tour of Britain is a special race for me so to be returning as
defending champion is a real honour.
Its always been a tough race but the support we receive from the fans is
incredible, and its our home tour so Ive always enjoyed racing it.
Thousands lined the route through Flintshire last year and large crowds are
sure to be out in force again showing their support for the riders this year as
the Tour passes through Mold town centre and on to the stage finish at
Cllr. Kevin Jones Cabinet Member with responsibility for Leisure said: The
Friends Life Tour of Britain is an exciting, high profile event highlights of
which will be seen on television across the world. I am delighted that this and
the extensive coverage in the local and national press and online will bring
Flintshire to the attention of a vast international audience.
This is a fantastic opportunity for local people to see the cream of
international cycling in action and I am sure crowds will be out in force to
enjoy the excitement and thrill of the race.
The riders are expected to reach Flintshire at 12.30hrs, travelling on A541
from Cefn Y Bedd to Llong then join B5444 Wrexham Street, High Street and Upper
High Street, Mold before heading out of Flintshire on the A541 towards St.
Rolling road closures will be in operation along the route which may result in
delays of approximately 15-20 minutes.
