Great British Tennis Weekend 2014
Published: 12/05/2014
Flintshire will serve some ace tennis action this summer starting with the
Great British Tennis weekend on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 May when there will
be free tennis across the County.
Venues will be offering a variety of coached and recreational free sessions to
encourage adults and children, to pick up a racquet and get out onto the court.
The weekend will start on Saturday 17 May with both Mold Tennis Club and
Buckley Leisure Centre running sessions between 10am and 1pm and Holywell
Leisure Centre between 2pm and 5pm.
On Sunday 18 May Penyffordd Tennis Club will be running sessions between 2pm
and 5pm. Further events are scheduled to take place over the summer and more
details will be made available over the coming months.
Matt Hayes from Flintshire Sports Development said: “The initiative is
supported by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and is an excellent opportunity
for people of all ages to come back to tennis or to try it for the first time.
Its a great way to keep fit and have fun and hopefully by signing up for the
sessions people will realise its easier and cheaper to play than they think.”
LTA Chief Executive, Michael Downey, said: “We are really excited to be
bringing the Great British Tennis Weekend back to tennis courts nationwide this
summer. Tennis in Britain has enjoyed some fantastic results in the last 12
months with the Davis Cup team reaching the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup
World Group and Andy Murray having won Wimbledon last year.
“It’s about capitalising on the interest in our sport, so that when people at
home are inspired by what our players do on court, that we offer them an
opportunity to get on court without cost being an issue. We have venues
nationwide and there really is something for everyone regardless as to a
person’s ability. Most importantly these weekends are going to be a lot of fun
that friends and families can enjoy together.”
Flintshire has been working hard to promote tennis and the weekend will also
see the Flintshire County Council receive a special award from Tennis Wales for
local authority contribution to tennis development.
Anybody wishing to sign up for a free session can book by going to
www.greatbritishtennisweekend.com or by turning up on the day. Sessions on
offer will include cardio tennis, adult coaching, mini tennis, family time and
free play.
