The ‘Giant of Hawarden Bridge’ Sculpture

Following months of planning and preparation, ‘The Giant of Hawarden Bridge’ sculpture is set to return to Deeside. The sculpture, more often known locally as the ‘Steel Man’ represents a steelworker at the former John Summer’s and Son site in Shotton, now Tata Steel. The sculpture had been relocated to the Civic Complex in Mold since the closure of the County Council’s Offices in Ewloe early 2000. However, Shotton Town Council have aspired to see the sculpture located closer to its source of inspiration and Flintshire County Council has been working closely with them to achieve this. The relocation of the sculpture forms part of the Connah’s Quay, Shotton and Queensferry Renewal Area programme. Funding for the Scheme was received from Shotton Town Council, Flintshire County Council and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The landscape of Deeside continues to develop and the sculpture represents a respectful acknowledgment of Deeside’s heavy industrial past, as it looks forward to its bright future, supported by its advanced manufacturing industries. The sculpture will be located at the junction of Chester Road East and Rowley’s Drive in Shotton. The new location for the sculpture will be improved with the addition of trees, shrubs, seating and lighting. Work is ongoing and due for completion later this month. Councillor Helen Brown, Cabinet Member for Housing said, Shotton Town Council have provided marvellous support for this project and I am delighted that the sculpture is finally being relocated to Shotton where I am sure it will become a much admired and striking part of the towns landscape.
