Westwood school progress recognised

Earlier this year Westwood CP, Buckley was removed from Estyn and County
Monitoring after four years of intensive challenge and change and in
recognition of this significant achievement the school welcomed Huw Lewis AM
Minister for Education and Skills and Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn and Deeside as
they visited the school.
Improvements of £450k to the school building and grounds include three new
classrooms, new pupil, staff and disabled toilets, a medical room, a new staff
room, a re-surfaced Foundation Phase outdoor area, improved access points to
the building and improved security measures.
Westwood CP is also sharing good practice in Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2
with other schools, especially the quality of feedback to pupils, the generally
high standards of pupil work and innovative ideas such as the provision of
watches to every child from Year 2 to Year 6 to wear in school to ensure all
children are able to tell the time.

“Westwood Community Primary School has really turned itself round under a
strong Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and Chair of Governors with help from
Flintshire County Council. The school we see today is achieving well and
crucially the pupils are so happy and engaged. It was really important that we
came to celebrate the hard work being done here and I know that the Minister
for Education and Skills Huw Lewis was very impressed with what he saw.”
Minister for Education and Skills, Huw Lewis AM said:
“I was delighted to visit Westwood Community Primary and see at close quarters
how the school has turned its fortunes around. I was extremely impressed with
the improvements the school has made to its grounds and facilities,
improvements which would not have been possible without the hard work and
commitment of the Headteacher, Mr Nicholson, his teaching colleagues and the
governing body.
Cllr. Chris Bithell, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth said,
“The school has made fantastic progress in recent years and I am sure that the
dedication, hard-work and commitment of the teaching and support staff and the
governing body will ensure that the school will go from strength to strength.”
Head Teacher, Rob Nicholson said,
“I am immensely proud of how far we have come as a school over my six years as
Head Teacher.
“It was a privilege to host Mr. Lewis and Mr. Sargeant as they visited our
wonderful school and I would like to extend an open invitation to anybody who
wishes to visit the school to see for themselves how far we have come and what
we are seeking to achieve.”
