Wepre Parks Pioneering Heating System

Flintshire Council heats one of its most prominent attractions with a pioneering heating system utilising green energy. 

Wepre Park Visitors Centre has undergone a transformation of its heating system from an ordinary gas boiler to an air source heat pump in September 2025.  

An air source heat pump is an alternative way to heat buildings, utilising the heat from the air outside and feeding it into the central heating system.

This takes the Council one step closer to the targets set out in the Climate Change Strategy, by swapping our buildings heating supply from gas to electricity. 

The centre is on a green energy tariff, which means that all the electricity comes from renewable energy such as solar and wind power. Making the building net zero in operation as the building operates fully without fossil fuels.  

By utilising funding opportunities like the Low Carbon Heat grant provided by the Welsh Government used for this project, the council shows it commitment to reduce carbon emissions across the County.

Installing an air source heat pump at one of the County’s main countryside estates visitors centres, is a win for wildlife and the community, cutting carbon emissions, protecting habitats and showing that climate action starts at the heart of nature. 

Cllr Chris Dolphin, Cabinet Member for Economy, Environment and Climate said “It is great to see the council taking proactive steps towards reducing their building emissions and meeting their climate change strategy targets, especially with a building such as Wepre Park Visitor’s Centre, which is one of many prominent attractions in Flintshire”.
