Groundbreaking housing development scheme for Flintshire

Published: 19/09/2014

The next steps in a groundbreaking programme to build affordable new homes in Flintshire will be discussed by members of the Councils Cabinet on Tuesday 16 September. It is part of the Flintshires ambitious Strategic Housing and Regeneration Programme which focuses on the major re development of Flint but also includes potential housing developments in other parts of the county. The Flint Master Plan has identified sites for housing regeneration to provide new homes in the town and is following a carefully phased programme currently underway to empty and, ultimately, demolish the Flint maisonettes. Nearly a quarter of the original medieval planned town will be re-developed with new houses and streets complementing Flint and its history. The proposals are for a mixed housing provision available for both Council and affordable rent. Elsewhere across the county, other potential housing development sites on council owned land have been identified, which could also provide a total of 220 housing units. Councillors will now be asked to approve the start of a procurement process for a preferred bidder for the development contract and source of potential funding. This will be advertised on 25 September via Sell2Wales and the European Journal with a view to awarding the contract in May 2015. Councillor Helen Brown, Cabinet member for Housing said: These are hugely exciting times for the people of Flint and other parts of the County. I am extremely pleased that the housing element of the town’s Master Plan is moving ahead in such a positive and constructive way and that the SHARP plan embraces a wider remit to help provide much needed housing in other parts of the county. Councillor Aaron Shotton, Leader of the Council said: This Council has prioritised the provision of new affordable housing including new build Council Houses across Flintshire, the regeneration of Flint provides us with a particularly exciting opportunity to begin to deliver upon our priorities.
