Summer Reading

Published: 10/10/2014

Children who had completed the Summer Reading Challenge at Mold Library had two additional treats when they came to collect their medals on Saturday 13 September. The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge was The Mythical Maze and children taking part at Mold Library were invited to mark their progress through the three stages of the challenge by first putting a canoe with their name on the board. They then had a person to sit in the canoe and finally paddles to get them across the finish line onto a board with a giant jigsaw puzzle depicting a maze of waterways. Mold Canoe Club agreed to come along to the library to talk to families about the sport and share some of their white water adventures. Children had the opportunity to sit in the boats and try out the kit and paddles for themselves. On behalf of Mold Canoe Club Robert Dixon said: When Mold Library contacted us, we were only too happy to help with their awards day and promote Paddle Sport in North Wales. It was great to see the children trying the boats and equipment out and hopefully this will encourage them to try canoeing at one of our forthcoming pool sessions at Connahs Quay Swimming Pool.” In addition Mold Library was one of 200 libraries across the UK taking part in the ‘Just Read’ Diary of a Wimpy Kid giveaway, supported by national charity The Reading Agency and children’s publisher Puffin. The giveaway highlighted how vital libraries are for the nation’s literacy and that books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid can really help children on their reading journey. Mold Library gave away 50 copies of the Diary of a Whimpy Kid. Thousands of Flintshire children have taken part in the Summer Reading Challenge again this year. This unique partnership between The Reading Agency and public libraries across the UK, saw MPs, libraries, schools and a host of well-known children’s authors including Jacqueline Wilson and Michael Morpurgo, encourage children aged 4-11 to join the library and read for pleasure during the summer holidays.
