NEW Homes update
Flintshire County Council’s new housing company is open for business and
members will hear a progress update at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday (13 May).
North East Wales (NEW) Homes is the innovative Council-owned company that
provides accommodation to people on the affordable register who do not qualify
for social housing but find it difficult to afford private rents.
Cabinet members will also be brought up to date with the progress of NEW Homes
who already manage 10 properties, have launched a website and held their first
board meeting. Plans soon to be approved mean that the company will also be
able to deal directly with housing developers who offer ‘gifted units’ to the
Council as part of on-going affordable homes targets.
The company will also offer a lettings and management service to landlords and
home owners over 55 will also be able to lease their properties to the company
and gain more points towards council retirement accommodation.
Councillor Helen Brown, Cabinet Member for Housing said:
“NEW Homes is offering a great service to bridge the gap between social housing
and residents who need more affordable rents and will significantly improve the
housing options available for our residents. The company is offering services
to landlords as well as older residents and will be happy to answer any
Councillor Aaron Shotton, Leader of the Council said:
“We are providing new alternative, affordable, housing for local people. Too
many local people, often young people, find that some private rentals are
unaffordable and out of reach, and I am proud that Flintshire County Council is
leading the way as the first Council in Wales to set up its own housing
company. The company is already going from strength to strength and I look
forward to see the progress made in the next few months.
