New schools open in September

Published: 15/07/2016

As they look forward to moving into their brand new schools in September, children are documenting the history of their schools for future generations by placing articles in a time capsule. A time capsule has been built in the wall of the main cafeteria area of the new flagship £30 million Holywell Learning Campus where new primary and secondary schools will be co-located on the site of the existing High School. Construction work began just last year and is progressing well and on schedule. The new schools will open from September 2016. The new primary school named Ysgol Maes y Felin will cater for learners up to the age of 11. This will be on the same site as the new facility for Holywell High School, which will be built to provide for the education of 11 to 16 year olds. Pupils from the schools placed time capsules into the wall which contained school information, letters, prospectus, information on after school activities, drawings, photos and many other mementoes. The schools involved in this project are Holywell High School as well as pupils from Ysgol Perth y Terfyn Infants School and Ysgol y Fron Junior School which the new school will replace, and the partner schools Lixwm CP School, Ysgol Y Llan - Whitford, Ysgol Bro Carmel, Ysgol Glan Aber Bagillt, Ysgol Maesglas, Greenfield and Ysgol Bryn Garth, Penyffordd Holywell. The new three storey secondary school will have 600 places and the single storey primary school will have 315 places. Primary children and secondary age students will be educated in the latest state of the art accommodation with all modern IT facilities to assist with learning. Councillor Chris Bithell, Flintshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: The pupils will soon be moving to their new schools but they wanted to ensure memories are not forgotten. Galliford Try has worked closely with the children and has involved us from the very early stages. The new schools have been built to a high standard, to provide modern, first class facilities and the best learning opportunities for our children. We wish the staff and pupils the very best in their new environment “ Jim Parker, Managing Director for Galliford Try Building North West, said: “It has been a pleasure to work with all the schools involved and the council in commemorating this event. For the whole team who have worked on this project, it remains a source of huge satisfaction to know that these pupils will be benefiting for years to come from these new facilities and we wish them well in their new school when it opens in September.”
