Refurbs Repair and Reuse Upcycle Workshops and Repair Sessions

Published: 03/02/2022

Refurbs.jpgThe Repair and Reuse Centre, featuring Caffi Cyfle in Buckley town centre, an initiative between Flintshire County Council and Refurbs, was officially opened on in November by Hannah Blythyn, MS Deputy Minister for Social Partnership.

At the opening event, local artist Jayne Hopwood held the first in a series of upcycling workshops.   The first featured how to make a leather purse, utilising discarded leather taken from the sofa de-construction project run by Refurbs at the Flintshire County Council Oakenholt Household Recycling Centre (HRC).

Looking ahead into 2022, further dates have been set for workshops in January, February and March, which will include upcycling unwanted costume jewellery and turning it into decorative items and patchwork and appliqué methods for upcycling fabric.  Alongside the workshops, monthly repair sessions are planned. This will give opportunities for community members to bring small household items to the café where they can learn from skilled volunteers how to repair and restore them.

We are now looking for volunteers from the local community who may have skills that they wish to share and get involved with the workshops and repair sessions.  We are looking for volunteers with general skills and knowledge such as woodwork, electrical or electronic repair, time piece and jewellery repair, sewing and upholstery to get involved with delivering these sessions.

Flintshire's Cabinet Member for Streetscene, Councillor Glyn Banks, said:

“We are pleased to offer such a unique and exciting centre in the community of Buckley with the aims of reducing waste, while bringing the community together.

We are very excited about developing the repair and reuse workshops ensuring that alternative solutions to unwanted or broken items is found.

If you are looking for a new challenge in 2022 or you just want to share your skills and knowledge to others in the community then do please get in touch.”

The Repair and Reuse Centre is a welcoming and relaxing space with the café offering a selection of freshly made food and hot drinks to eat in or take away.

If you are interested in getting involved and want to try volunteering at a workshop or at a repair session to share your skills and knowledge, please get in touch with Hanna Clarke on 01978 757524 / events@refurbs.org.uk
