Holywell Town Centre set for a revamp
Published: 19/06/2014
Holywell will be transformed over the coming months as work begins to
regenerate the town centre.
Following a period of consultation with Holywell Town Council, Holywell Town
Partnership and the general public, the first phase of construction is due to
start in July and last around three months.
Residents and local business owners are invited to meet staff from Flintshire
County Council and the works contractor (GH James) to see the plans. Staff will
be on hand at the Holywell Connects, Holywell High Street on Tuesday 1 July
from 3.30pm to 6.30pm to discuss any concerns they may have before work takes
place.
Plans include: improvements to key entrances into the town centre with the
creation of a gateway feature on Whitford Street; an attractive steps based
entrance to lead into the town from Well Street; a general tidy up of the High
Street and an impressive plinth for the new sculpture in the heart of the town
centre.
A dedicated coach drop off zone will also be developed at the bottom of Tower
Gardens as part of a new County Council tourism initiative to encourage group
organisers to include Flintshire as a destination for group travel.
Councillor Derek Butler, Cabinet Member for Economic Development said: “These
improvements to the fabric of Holywell Town Centre will complement other
activities taking place, give pride to local residents and help encourage more
visitors to the area.”
Flintshire County Council has secured funding for streetscape and access
improvements from the European Regional Development Fund and the Rural
Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013, which is in turn, funded by the Welsh
Government and the European Fund for Rural Development.
